The late 1960s and early 1970s brought the height of popularity of the kaftan in mainstream fashion. Fashion icons such as Diana Vreeland and Elizabeth Taylor touted this dress as the most feminine fashion, and as “fashionable for the beautiful people”. This modern kaftan was inspired by the traditional kaftan of Morocco, where it has been worn for many centuries. Our sewing pattern is for a typical early 1970s kaftan – a V-neck, empire waist, pullover dress. The flattering drape of this full dress makes it comfortable and graceful. Our pattern is floor-length with short sleeves and optional inside ties for shaping. Bodice and panels around the dress allow for mixing of fabric prints.
